Nothing much you can do about chimneys getting wet, except to ensure the chimney cap overhangs the edges so the water drips off onto the roof, and doesn’t flow down the chimney. Brick replacement is not cheap n the saturated bricks freezes and expands, shattering the bricks. This is what causes the surface of the bricks to “spall” ( break: brick, rock, stone, or concrete) into smaller pieces ).
